“Lies, Damn Lies and Statistics: Science and Heated Family Law Controversies”
This one day training will address how different people can legitimately and illegitimately spin research or the lack of research findings in custody and visitation disputes.
Speaker: Robert E. Emery, Ph. D. is a Professor of Psychology and Director of the Center for Children, Families, and the Law at the University of Virginia, where he has spent his entire academic career (beginning in 1981). His research focuses on family relationships and children’s mental health, including parental conflict, divorce, child custody, family violence, and genetically informed studies of all these issues, as well as associated legal and policy issues. Dr. Emery has authored over 150 scientific publications and several books. He maintains a practice as a clinical psychologist and divorce mediator. He is the father of 5 children.
Speaker: Marsha Kline Pruett, Ph. D., M.S.L., is the Maconda Brown O’Connor Professor at Smith College and School of Social Work. She served as the Director of Child and Adolescent Programs at the Consultation Center, a Yale affiliated center for prevention and intervention research and programming. She has more than 20 years of clinical experience with individuals, couples, families and children. Nationally noted for her research regarding child adjustment to divorce, joint custody, school interventions and work/family conflicts, Dr. Kline Pruett has written over 50 articles, chapters and reviews.
Our Speakers have co-authored several papers discussing research and practice in the area of this topic that will appear in the upcoming April issue of Family Court Review.
